Larkin's career began at the age of fourteen
at a London illustration studio where he worked as an apprentice commercial
artist. In the 1970s, Larkin was
asked to edit and design large format art books for Ballantine Books, the first,
a book on the work of the 20th Century Belgian artist, Magritte.
He collaborated on Fairies, a New York Times bestseller in
1978. Recent works include
self-described "big books or illustrated documentaries" such as Frank
Lloyd Wright-The Master Works; American Masterworks-The Twentieth Century House;
Frederick Law Olmstead-Designing the American Landscape;
Shaker: Life, Work and Art; Barn-The
Art of a Working Building; Farm-The
Vernacular of Working Buildings; The
Essential Book of Rural America; County
Wisdom; County Acres; and Country
Wild. David's
most recent titles are The
Treehouse Book; and Mill-The Past and Future of Naturally Powered
Buildings. In addition to books
David has written, he has designed a number of other well known and highly
regarded books, such as Wendell Garrett's American
Colonial and Roger Kennedy's Mission.
David Larkin has come to be recognized internationally as one of the
primary portrayers of rural America, especially its structures, in the tradition
of Eric Sloane and other authors. His
books are as informative as they are beautiful.
